Title: Windbreak Shelter Effect in Taichung Harbor

Abstract: Abstract: In this study, the shelter effect of windbreaks in Taichung Harbor was investigated in a wind tunnel in which the test section was 3 m wide, 2.2 m high, and 18.5 m long. Windbreaks consisting of a row of either half-circular or rectangular elements, with different spacings were arranged across wind, and were tested for wind attenuation in the Turning Basin region of the harbor. The results indicate that the half-circular type provides a better shelter effect than the rectangular type. The horizontal gradient of the wind speed is smoother in the left hand lee side when the half-circular type of windbreak is used, and the lines of equal attenuation factor are more parallel to the row of windbreaks. This would be advantageous for handling large vessels in the Turning Basin of the harbor.
