Abstract: Abstract: Computer-aided inspection using a machine vision system is one of the many new technologies adding to the efficiency of manufacturing processes and metrology. To achieve maximum efficiency, a measurement algorithm for a machine vision system must be developed, and measurement loss—the loss due to measurement error—must be studied and analyzed. A heuristic algorithm for line segment measurement is developed to improve edge orientation detection in general edge detectors. From the reference point of spatial resolution, users can select a feasible hardware component combination and determine a feasible threshold value at which the measurement algorithm is introduced. Moreover, a way to explicitly determine the measurement loss for a machine vision system is developed. Measurement loss is studied by the cost caused from measurement error, which is composed of acceptance and rejection errors. Users can evaluate if a machine vision system is feasible for the application. The approach of determining the measurement loss can be utilized for other machine vision system applications.
