Title: Effect of w/c ratio on the elastic modulus of transition zone

Abstract: Abstract: In order to investigate the effect of the water-cementitious (w/c)
ratio of cement-based materials (CBM) on the elastic modulus of the
transition zone (TZ), cylindrical specimens with different w/c ratios
(w/c = 0.3, 0.4, 0.45, and 0.5) and volume fractions (a/t = 0., 0.1,
0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) of spherical lightweight aggregate were cast
and tested. The double-inclusion method and Mori-Tanaka theory
were used to predict the elastic moduli of three-phase (cement
paste, aggregate, and TZ) composite materials. A comparison was
made between the theoretical results and experimental data. Based
on the comparison, the estimated elastic modulus of TZ is about
50%, 40%, and 20% of the matrix modulus for CBM with a w/c ratio
of 0.4, 0.45, and 0.5, respectively. Test results also show that the
overall elastic properties of the CBM depend mainly on the volume
fraction of aggregate and the matrix w/c ratio.
