Abstract: Abstract: We show here that the basic theory of sections for probability measure preserving flows and Kakutani equivalence for probability measure preserving endomorphisms can be lifted to the case of semiflows (actions of R +) and endomorphisms if one replaces conjugacy by shift equivalence. This leads to a notion of "Kakutani shift equivalence", that two endomorphisms induce shift equivalent actions. We give a variety of characterizations of this property. We develop a theory of time changes for semiflows and indicate a variety of directions to pursue, both for semiflows and for shift equivalence of endomorphisms. The authors offer this work in celebration of the many and profound contributions of Professor Anatole Katok to the study of dynamical system.
