Title: Using Sugarcane Bagasse Ash as Partial Cement Replacement in Cement-Based Composites

Abstract: Abstract:Sugarcane bagasse ash is a by-product generated by burning bagasse in boilers of sugar and ethanol plants and consists mainly of silica (SiO2). This characteristic can indicate the potential of sugarcane bagasse ash for use as a supplementary cementitious material in cement-based composites, depending on the chemical composition and pozzolanic properties. This study is aimed to evaluate the properties of cement-based composites using various bagasse ash contents (10, 20 and 30% by weight of cement) and various particle sizes of bagasse ash (less than 45 and 150 μm) as a partial replacement for Portland cement in mortars. The pozzolanic strength activity test, flow test, compressive strength test, dry shrinkage test, absorption test, rapid chloride penetration test and scanning electron microscope observations were conducted and compared. Tests results indicate that the pozzolanic strength activity index is 104% for bagasse ash at the age of 91 days. The composites with 10% bagasse ash have lower shrinkage, lower chloride penetration and higher compressive strength in comparison with control specimens. In addition, the specimens containing bagasse ash show denser internal structure as illustrated by scanning electron microscope observations.
