Title: Examination of the Northeastern South China Sea Velocity Models for Earthquake Monitoring Using Seismic Observation at the Donsha Island

Abstract: Abstract: The Manila Trench located northeastern region of the South China Sea (SCS) has been considered as one of the highest potential disaster regions of earthquake and tsunami of the western Pacific Ocean. However, related tectonic investigation and seismic monitoring in this region for nature hazard evaluation and reduction are limited. To implementseismic activity monitoring in this region, we need some seismic stations located at SCS and closed to the western side of the Manila Trench to observe seismic wave and T-wave. In this study, we reported two period’s seismic observations in Donsha island (1999-2001, 2003-2005). Based on recorded data, we examined and analyzed the preliminary seismic and T-wave velocity models for Donsha island. A 1-D seismic model was obtained and used to examine seismic monitoring ability in the NE SCS region. Results of this study indicated that seismic observation at Donsha island may pay important role in recent proposed SCS network to reduce earthquake location errors major in EW direction. We suggest future installation of hydrophone channels in Donsha island are significant contribution for SCS seismic monitoring and warning. However, to image large earthquake source rupture process, more dense observations in Taiwan and Philippines are necessary.
