Title: Generation of nonlinear internal wave packet in Luzon Strait

Abstract: Abstract: Most nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) are generated by interactions between tidal current and sill-type bathymetry. In the middle of Luzon Strait, which lies between Taiwan and Luzon islands, there is HengChung Submarine Ridge that has the average depth over 1500 m near Luzon. This is much deeper than most sills that generate NLIW in continental shelf like East China Sea and Andaman Sea, or in marginal seas like Sulu Sea. Large amplitude (up to 175 m) NLIWs were observed in May 2005, and explained with KdV type equations. The location of NLIW generation and their evolution to NLIW (a packet of non-sinusoidal depression of isopycnals) from internal tide (sinusoidal depression of isopycnals) are targets of our study. Combining in situ and satellite data that were collected in spring 2005 and spring 2006, we may form a picture of the evolution of NLIW from sinusoidal depressions near the submarine ridge, to five NLIW-type depressions at 180 km distance from the submarine ridge. It all happens in about 150 km distance west of HengChung submarine Ridge. A NLIW model that was proposed by Apel (2002) can simulate this evolution of NLIW quite well. The convergence and divergence that is associated with the passing of NLIW, is believed to be the generation mechanism of surface roughness. A proxy case that shows the relationship between surface roughness and tidal current is studied. Further study on the generation of NLIW in the Luzon Strait and its relation to the surface roughness is planned for Spring 2007.
