Title: Application of the Mushy Cell Tracking Method for Gallium Melting

Abstract: Abstract: A thermally driven mushy cell tracking algorithm has been proposed and successfully applied to phase-change problems [3]. The interface tracking equation is based on the energy balance at the mushy cells which separate the liquid phase and solid phase. The mushy cell tracking method is applied to Gallium melting problem which has been studied experimentally [1] and numerically [2]. Previous study of this problem is not conclusive. It is found that prediction of the interface dynamics and thermo-fluid field with coarse meshes matches better than that with fine meshes. In this study, the mushy cell tracking method is applied to simulate Gallium melting systematically. Both unstructured meshes and structured meshes are used in the computations. Prediction of the moving interface and thermo-fluid field agrees well with the experiment data and other numerical solutions.
