Abstract: Abstract: Geographical Information System (GIS) is a powerful tool to capture, process, analyze, and visualize geographically referenced information. For marine environment, the traditional GIS can not meet the requirement for its rapid changes in space and time, a more powerful and purpose-oriented GIS, called Marine GIS (MGIS), is therefore necessary to analyze the unstable and multi-dimensional marine data. In this study, we will develop a MGIS emphasizing the information retrieved from satellite remote sensing data. Satellite data has the advantages of its wide coverage, high repetition, and relatively high spatial resolution. A series of world-wide satellite-derived images (e.g., sea surface temperature, sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration, sea surface wind, and etc.) for a selected area can be integrated to our MGIS to see their spatial and temporal variations.
