|Abstract: ||ABSTRACT: In order to determine the complete 1,141 bp nucleotide sequence of mitochondrial cytochrome
b gene for five common species of stingray in Taiwan (including Dasyatis navarrae, D. kuhlii, Dipturus
kwangtungensis, Aetobatus narinari and Platyrhina sinensis), four sets (L14735/H15149ad, L14734-
Glu/H15557-CYB, CB4aL-15040/CB6ThrH 15930 and L15460/CB6ThrH-15930) of fish-versatile primer
were used to amplify three continuous and overlapping entire cytochrome b gene sequences. The
complete 1,141 bp cytochrome b gene sequences have for the first time been applied to calculate base
compositions and genetic distances. The genetic distances calculated from cytochrome b genes of five
common species of stingray in Taiwan indicate relationships between species to similar to those already
shown by studies using the traditional morphological taxonomic approach.
