Abstract: Taiwan started to deploy observers on distant water fishing vessels since 2002. This report summarized the observers data collected from thirty one trips with 1843 observations days in 2007. The coverage rate was 9.5% by efforts. The catch composition varied by fleets. In bigeye fleet, over 62% of catch were bigeye and other tunas, 12% of swordfish and other billfishes, 12% of blue sharks. In temperate waters, the albacore accounted over 80% in the northern fleet, and 87% in the southern fleet, the percentage of billfishes and sharks were less than 5%. In addition, nominal monthly CPUE and length frequency of major species and the incidental catch of ecological related species were recorded.
