Title: Using OBS Aftershock Data to Analyze the Stress Distribution of 2010 Maule Chile Mega Earthquake

Abstract: abstract:2010 February 27, Chile Mega Earthquake (M=8.8) occurred at the Maule area in middle of Chile. In 1960, Chile stroke by the largest earthquake of human ever recorded event, with a magnitude of 9.5. In the west coast of Chile, it is a convergence plate boundary between the Nazca and South American plates. The Nazca Plate subduct toward northeast direction with a convergence rate of 8 cm per year beneath the South American Plate, accumulating the stress in the lower part of the subducted plate to some certain extent and result by the destructive ruptures. Our team has deployed 17 Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBSs) to record the aftershock data at the main event area, and collected a total of 23 days. From the data of this survey, we analyze the P- and S-wave arrivals. The relocation of these aftershock events was done by using a global 1-D velocity model (iasp91). The data are still in processes. Our efforts will focus on a better understanding of the aftershock distribution along the seismogenic zone.
