|Abstract: ||Abstract:Use of a shiphandling simulator in the validation of a proposed new Line-of-Sight guidance concept for path following control of a ship is discussed in this work. The traditional Line-of-Sight guidance method was widely adopted in vehicle navigation. In this work, the path following mission is achieved through a sequence of changing the guiding course towards the pre-defined path or way points. The drawback of the conventional LOS guidance law is that a way-point located far away from the vehicle will result in large cross-track errors if there are transverse wind, current and wave disturbances. Therefore, the modified Line-of-Sight guidance method has been proposed. The modified LOS guidance method is characterized by a special setting nLpp (n times ship length) factor. This would bring the ship back to the path by adopting a new correction course which was calculated with the nLpp setting. However, if the setting is smaller than the vehicle maneuverability, track-keeping becomes an almost impossible mission. In this study, we propose a new LOS guidance concept to solve these problems during the path following maneuver. The feasibility of the proposed approach will be verified by performing a series of path following maneuvers using a shiphandling simulator setting.|
