Title: Dietary Zinc Requirements of Juvenile Hybrid Tilapia, Oreochromis Niloticus × O. Aureus

Abstract: Abstract:To quantify the dietary zinc(Zn) requirement of juvenile hybrid tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus × O. aureus),zinc sulfate was added to the basal diet at 0,5,10,20,30,40,50and 100mg Zn/kg diet prociding the actual dietary value of 17.5,21.7,28.0,39.9,49.0,54.6,70.0 and 119.7 mg Zn/kg diet,respectively. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of tilapia(initial body weight 0.55± 0.01 g)in a recirculated rearing system for 8 weeks. The Zn concentration in rearing water was monitored during the feeding period and to be 8.14 µg/l. Weight gain,feed efficiency and surrvival of tilapia were not affected by the dietary treatments. Whole body,plasma,bone and scale Zn concentrations were higher in fish fed diets with ≧ 21.7 mg Zn/kg than that in fish fed the unsupplemented control diet. Fish fed diets with ≧49.0 mg Zn/kg had highest plasma alkaline phosphatase(ALP)activity,followed by fish fed diets with 21.7-39.9 mg Zn/kg,and lowest in fish fed the control diet.Plasma copper-zinc superoxide dismutase(Cu-Zn SOD) was unaffected by the dietary treatments. Analysis by broken-line regression of plasma ALP activity and Zn concentration and linear regression of whole-body Zn retention of the fish indicate that the adequate dietary Zn concentration in growing hybrid tilapia is about 26-29 mg Zn/kg diet.
