Abstract: Abstract:China is the biggest producer of grouper in the world and followed by Taiwan, and Indonesia is on the third place in grouper production. However the major investors of grouper farming in Indonesia are coming from Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong where their populations are Chinese. In Thailand, the grouper are produced by cage culture and the 90% of that are Epinephelus malabaricus and Cromileptes altivelis. All of the produced grouper are then exported to Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Taiwan where are also Chinese markets. Some Singaporean invest in grouper business by cage culture in Malaysia and export the product to Hong Kong or export back to their domestic market. In Vietnam, Vung Tau and Nha Trang are two major production areas where the brown marbled grouper are produced by Taiwanese investors and exported to the southeast Asia. On August 2 2007, the Business News of Indonesia reported that the annual production of grouper in this nation will be much higher than that of China and Vietnam. The major reason, quoting from Made L. Nurjana (SEAFDEC Council Director for Indonesia and Director-General of Aquaculture), is that the grouper productions of China and Vietnam are damaged by typhoon this year. Mr. Made L. Nurjana explained further that the China market is so big that demanding of grouper seems unlimited in future. Moreover, the 2008 Olympian Games will be held at Beijing that will increase the demanding of grouper rapidly and therefore maintain its unit price at a good level. As a result, the production of grouper from Indonesia will also increase rapidly. According to the reports from Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia, the annual production of grouper was 6,552 tons in 2004, 12,000 tons in 2006 and 30,000 tons estimated in 2009. Indonesia has exported grouper of 4,800 tons at $24 million (USD) in 2006 and may export 6,340 tons at $31.7 million (USD) this year.
