Abstract: Abstract:Marine ecological environment and fishery resources would be severely polluted or damaged by wasted oil from fishing vessels, if they are emitted directly into ocean without any proper pre-treatment process because small space in the vessels can not equipped installations to store the oil on board in compliance with international regulations. In this study, an on-site investigation on the sources and types of waste oils, regulations of recycling and treating wasted oils, and procedures for managing these wasted oils were carried out. The representatives of local fishery associations were visited to acquire their suggestions on suitable management of wasted oil from fishing vessels. This study found that the existing procedures for recycling and treating wasted lubricating oil on land could be applied to deal with wasted oil and bilge water from fishing vessels. It is suggested that oil-water separators and facilities for collecting wasted oil should be placed at each fishing port and shipyard. Fishermen should be required to have their wasted oil collected in ports, and then the oil should be treated by legal recycling companies. These measures can control the discharge of waste oil from fishing vessels, protect global marine ecological environment and increase economic value of wasted fishery oil
