Title: Engine Modification and Exhaust Emissions for a Diesel Engine Fuelled with Neat Dimethyl Ether

Abstract: The fuel system of a diesel engine is modified to accommodate with neat DME fuel. The opening pressure of injection nozzle is lowered down from the original setting. A larger plunger diameter is used so that 1.51 times of DME fuel volume is injected. Compared with diesel fuel, only 82.5% of DME fuel energy is injected under full load operations. The experimental results show that 88.6% of maximum brake torque at high speed is achieved. The exhaust emissions of DME engine is almost smoke free. The NOx emissions of DME engine decrease by 30~50%. The unburned hydrocarbon emission of DME engine increases to several folds of original value.
