Abstract: Abstract:The effects of a composite Tb/Pt/Ru underlayer on the microstructure and magnetic properties of the CoPtCr–SiO2 perpendicular recording layer were studied. Among various underlayers of Pt/Ru, Ta/Pt/Ru, and Tb/Pt/Ru, we demonstrated that the media with the Tb/Pt/Ru underlayer exhibited an enhancement of SiO2 segregation at grain boundaries, a refinement of the grains, the narrow c-axis distribution, and consequently, improved magnetic properties.
