abstract:Because construction convenience, earthquake resistance, long span, high rise, or aesthetic demand, steel structure in Taiwan area have an increasing tendency recently. However Taiwan is the island surrounded by sea water, warm and damp exposure environment would easily corrode steel. How to control and prevent the corrosion becomes an important research topic for steel construction sector. Proper use of coating materials for steel structures subjected to the rainy, subtropical climate exposure is an effective way to control corrosion. Nowaday, the following techniques are normally adopted. They are (1) cathodic control protection by sacrificial metal coatings; (2)anodic control protection by noble metal coatings; (3) electromotive force control protection by noble metal coatings; (4) mixed control protection by conversion coatings; (5) electromotive force control protection by organic/inorganic coatings; and (6) protection by organic/inorganic coatings, in which organic/inorganic corrosion prevention coating application can conform to the multi-purpose corrosion prevention requirement. The newly development of FEVE (Fluoroethylene-Alkyl Vinyl Ether) fluoro-carbon coating as an organic corrosion prevention coating material for steel structures is a promising method for durable corrosion protection. In addition, it is worthy to evaluate the effect of adding nano-TiO2 on anti-dirt or self-cleaning ability of coating materials. The testing program is divided into two-year scheme; first year: literature survey, evaluation of constituent materialsspecimen preparation, determination of mix proportions and working procedure; second year: specimen testings include (1) bond between coating material and steel, impact resistance test, surface glossiness, microscopic surface observation; (2) corrosion behavior evaluations include open circuit potential and corrosion rate under various exposure environments such as artificial salt water and acid solution. Test results would provide civil construction professionals with newly developing information for steel corrosion control, which may improve the durability of steel structures to achieve the sustainable requirement of energy-saving and CO2-reduction for modern society.
