Abstract: abstract:The mostly used method for GRS structures design is the pseudo-static method, which is often suitable mainly for small to medium scale seismic design. However, most of the areas in Taiwan have been considered to be possibly subjected to medium to large seismic events. In addition, GRS structure has been increasingly use in the past decades, a further study regarding nonlinear behaviors as well as performance of the structures due to strong earthquake is important and necessary. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the behaviors and possible failure modes of GRS structures due to strong earthquake. The results of this first phase study is using Bouc-Wen model to simulate hysteretic behaviors of in-isolated geosynthetics. The Bouc-Wen model considers the material stiffness and strength decay due to cyclic loading and also considers possibly strain rate dependent material properties. The simulated results are compared to available analytical and/or experimental results. Good agreement between predicted and tested results is obtained.
