Abstract: In the first year of this project, we study two kinds of matrix equa- tions for discrete-time descriptor systems, namely a generalized discrete-time Lyapunov equation(GDLE) and a general- ized discrete-time algebraic Riccati equa- tion(GDARE). Necessary and sucient conditions are given under which a GDLE or a GDARE has a (unique) symmetric solution. All the results given will be used in the study of H.infinity. control and related problems for discrete-time descriptor systems in the next two years.
